Charles Burns – Somewhere Between Nightmares and Reality

My baby sister and I used to sit in bed and read Charles Burns comics together, we read Big Baby, El Borbah and Skin Deep. It’s one of my best memories of being with her.

Charles Burns is an expert at mixing weirdness with grace. His characters evolve in strange middle worlds and the turmoil of their emotions is translated in a style that is highly psychedelic. My personal favourite has to be El Borbah. The main character is a masked-wrestler private-investigator bad-ass uncovering one dirty ploy after another, it’s funny, masterly and exhaustively deals with some of humanity’s darkest traits.
